As women in technology, we recognize the power of lifting each other up, especially when it comes to issues as vital as health and wellness. With this month’s theme, “HER HEALTH,” we’re called to focus on the unique challenges that many women, particularly those in marginalized communities, face in accessing quality healthcare and wellness resources. Through this, we can explore ways to advocate for and support each other in bridging these wellness gaps.
Understanding HER HEALTH: A Look at the Facts
It’s no secret that health disparities exist across different groups, but the impact on marginalized women is especially stark. Studies reveal that women of color, LGBTQ+ women, and women with disabilities experience barriers to healthcare access and support. For example, the CDC reports that Black women are three times more likely to die from pregnancy-related causes than white women—a statistic that underscores the urgency of this issue. HER HEALTH is not just a women’s issue; it’s a matter of equity, demanding awareness and action from all of us.
What Can We Do?
As a white woman in tech, I want to acknowledge my privilege and approach this topic with humility and care. By educating ourselves about these disparities, we can better understand how to use our roles and resources to support women who face systemic barriers to health and wellness.
Here are a few ways we can make a meaningful impact:
- Educate and Raise Awareness
One step is to bring awareness into our professional circles. Consider hosting monthly “Health & Wellness” spotlights where guest speakers from varied backgrounds can share firsthand perspectives on health disparities. This can open up valuable discussions that broaden understanding and compassion in our community. - Advocate for Equitable Healthcare Policies in the Workplace
Many tech companies offer wellness programs, but do these address the diverse health needs of all women? Advocating for inclusive healthcare policies—like access to specialized mental health resources, maternity care, and flexible wellness plans—can ensure our workplace supports HER HEALTH in all its forms. - Build Support Networks
Supporting HER HEALTH goes beyond policy; it’s about fostering an environment where every woman feels empowered. Mentorship circles, safe spaces, and open forums can allow women from marginalized communities to share their experiences and connect with allies who stand by them.
A Path Forward Together
Let’s make HER HEALTH more than just a theme; let’s integrate it into our everyday conversations and workplace culture. By taking small but intentional steps, we can create a supportive environment where every woman feels seen, respected, and safe to discuss her health journey. As allies, our role isn’t to speak over, but to stand alongside, ensuring that HER HEALTH is a shared priority for all.
Together, as colleagues and allies, let’s champion HER HEALTH with empathy, action, and a commitment to making wellness accessible for every woman in tech.
